Meet Our Clean Council

Behind every clean label decision at Merryfield are four industry experts and decades of experience in their fields. Get to know Joe Dickson, Kim McDevitt, Mia Davis and Errol Schweizer, the individuals who comprise Merryfield's Clean Council.
JOE DICKSON JOE DICKSON is Merryfield' Co-Founder and Head of Standards & Policy. A leading advocate for natural and organic products as well as organic agriculture and integrity in food labeling for the past two decades, Joe is an expert on clean labels. Before joining Merryfield, Joe spent fifteen years at Whole Foods Market. He held several roles but culminated his tenure as Director of Quality Standards, where he led the team responsible for developing and maintaining standards for the products sold in its stores as well as developing and maintaining the company's status as the first national certified organic retailer. He launched many company standards programs, such as Premium Body Care standard for personal care products, Eco-Scale standards for cleaning products, strict requirements for organic personal care products, the company's industry-leading standards for egg production, and the company's GMO Labeling policy. Joe has also served as a board member of The Non-GMO Project, the National Organic Standards Board and the Texas Department of Agriculture Organic Industry Advisory Board. He has been a Trustee of The Organic Center since 2017. A graduate of Vassar College, Joe lives on a ranch in Bastrop County, Texas, where he and his husband raise goats and chickens, grow vegetables, and manage the property as a songbird and wildlife sanctuary.
KIM MCDEVITT, MPH, R.D. A registered dietitian who specializes in family nutrition, KIM MCDEVITT, MPH, R.D. is integral in developing Merryfield’s quality standards, curating its product selection and furthering our commitment to clean labels. She also works with our brands on developing partnerships as well as on our content since she knows almost everything there is to know about food. Her book, The 14-Day Detox for Weight Loss, which was published in August 2020, is a guide to making smarter, cleaner food choices for health, wellness and longevity. Before joining Merryfield, Kim spent five years creating digital content, working on Research and Design and developing educational materials for Vega in addition to building her own private nutrition practice and writing for websites including Runners World and US News & World Report. Kim earned her Master’s in Public Health from the University of Michigan and now calls Cape Elizabeth, Maine home. When she’s not scrutinizing labels or sussing out the latest clean label products, Kim spends time running, skiing, cooking and chasing after her three young kids.
MIA DAVIS A pioneer in the clean beauty movement, MIA DAVIS oversees Merryfield's product and ingredient standards for personal care. Before joining the Merryfield team, Mia was Head of Environment, Health and Safety at Beautycounter. She was also a leader at the Environmental Working Group's Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, where she compelled conventional beauty companies to remove toxic chemicals from baby shampoos, skincare, and makeup formulations. In addition to working with Merryfield, Mia is the Director of Mission at Credo Beauty and she has consulted for Honest Company, goop, Sundots and other brands, where she works with teams to create strong chemical policies for cleaner, safer, more sustainable processes and products. This multitasking mom of two lives outside of Boston.
ERROL SCHWEIZER A longtime advocate of a cleaner, safer and more equitable food system, ERROL SCHWEIZER brings more than 25 years of experience in the natural and organic food movement to Merryfield. As a member of our Clean Council, Errol is integral in vetting thousands of ingredients to ensure they meet our strict, clean label standards. Errol is a Board Member and Strategic Advisor for over a dozen food brands and retailers, including Good Eggs, Farmer Direct Organic Food, and Nuttzo. He is also a co-founder of Basics Market, Mood33 Sparkling Cannabis Beverages, Herbl Distribution, and BeyondBrands, a consulting agency, as well as Good Catch, a plant-based seafood analogue. Errol previously served as the Vice President of Grocery for Whole Foods Market, leading the merchandising, purchasing and product assortment for more than 80 categories and $5 billion in annual sales. His team helped many progressive, innovative companies become mainstream, establishing trends such as Plant-based, Biodynamic, Hemp and Grassfed, as well as shepherding more than 10,000 items through Non-GMO Project Verification. Errol was named one of the top 25 retail game-changers in the food industry by Supermarket News. A native of The Bronx, New York, Errol is an avid gardener and permaculture practitioner who enjoys traveling and spending his free time with his family.
